Dragon Book Beta Test

Hey, for those of you who read this. I'm starting a novel-length book project and I'd like to gather some feedback as I go through. I'm hoping to make the book good enough to charge money for, but if you help by reviewing it, for your help you'll get a free digital copy.

If anyone's interested, let me know. The best way to reach me is on AIM at TJSynkral but comments here or notes would eventually be found. However I will need your e-mail address to send the attachment to in any case. I expect some kind of feedback, "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" won't really help me so you'll need to tell me what you did and didn't like about it.

Everything is still up in the air but right now the working title is "Blackshed" and the book's protagonist is a male anthro dragon named Krane. He'll be living in a human world (OMG) so he's likely going to be the only nonhuman character in the story.

My first observation with my new Kindle:

Why does Windows 7 need 2 minutes to sort my porn by date, every time I open the folder, when Windows XP was able to do it in an instant?

UPDATE: I figured it out and Microsoft is fucking stupid. "Date" in Win7 means it tries to read the Date Picture Taken from the EXIF tags in EACH IMAGE. I had to dig in a menu and find "Date Modified" in the options to sort by that, which is instant like WinXP. Seriously, does anybody TEST this shit?

Oh, that's right, I know several people who did. Either they didn't complain about it or it fell on deaf ears...

Hotel Identity

Dear Anthrocon attendees:

There are two hotels owned by the J. Willard Marriott hotel company within walking distance of the convention center on the main triangular wedge of land in Pittsburgh.

There is a Courtyard by Marriott at 945 Penn Avenue, which is very conveniently located at less than one-tenth of a mile from the entrance to the con.

There is also a Marriott Hotel located at 112 Washington Place, just across the street from the Doubletree hotel, about 6/10ths of a mile away from the con.

If you say you're staying "at the Marriott," but you're actually staying at the Courtyard by Marriott, you're misinforming people and being an idiot. You're staying at the Courtyard. Big difference.

Dear Illinois General Assembly:

That sneaky, under-ass-handed deal you made with ComEd, to increase my power bill by 20% in exchange for money to help balance the State budget you fucked over? Instead of just raising the tax rates?

Yeah, I fucking noticed. Fuck you.

AC room needed for Sunday night

Hey... I seem to have fucked up ever so slightly and booked my room through Sunday. I actually should have booked through Monday. That leaves me with no room Sunday night.

Anyone want a room share? Me and two others, most likely. Great way to fill Sunday night if the rest of your crew leaves Sunday but you don't.

I've just gone through and changed the security on nine years worth of LJ posts, about 1100 of them, to friends only. It's really just because I don't know what all I may have said in those old posts and whether any of it could be used against me. :P

While it was processing I loaded my LJ up to see some old posts and saw a few gems. Here's a funny one from July 27th, 2002:

Random thought:
We have TV stations for everything else...

Why isn't there a network for homosexuals?

Of course, now there is such a network.

Among other things I saw was a prediction of LiveJournal eventually abandoning their promise to never have ads on free accounts (hah!) and my first use of XSL, which I would end up being the only expert at my work on the technology used by our platform 8 years later. And of course the times when I was happily mated. But now, I'm happily not mated, and that works too :D

I'm here! I ended up having no ride shares or room shares... but at least I have a private room. I had them move me to a king bed room and it's pretty nice.

Also... awesomest room key ever:

List Cleanup and Ranting about people who announce their list cleanups
Grin

I've always been frustrated by people who announce that they're cleaning up their AIM lists... mostly because, depending on the person's contact rules, being on a list or not doesn't stop me being able to contact that person (and anyone douche enough to go invisible or block people not on their list isn't worth being "buddies" with) and I don't stand to lose anything by being dropped by a person who has realized he won't be messaging me anyway. This is the approach that most people take when cleaning their AIM lists.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, here's what I'm doing: I'm going through my list, and I'm poking people who are online and sort of reminding them who I am and seeing if they're still interested. If they don't reply, I'll give up, or possibly try again later if there is something interesting about the person. It will take several iterations because I'm only sorting people who are online.

Then, there's another category of person. This is the type of person who acted like my friend, gave some notice to my IM's when contacted, but showed no interest in me in a setting like a con or the local furry scene (depending on the person, I may well have made numerous attempts to reach him by phone or text in this type of situation). I won't bother with those people, but if you're one of those people and wonder why I never IM you anymore, it's probably because I've realized there's no chance of it ever turning into a real life friendship. If someone puts forth an effort not to become a real life friend, I have no interest in being a virtual friend.

One last thing. Some of you have oh-so-clever AIM names like BleepaBlorg0392 or FoxThis or FurThat. I have no fucking clue who the fucking fuck you are. I try to add notes under your AIM but sometimes they get lost in AOL's servers. Don't be offended if I ask you who you are. If I have to resort to that, that means that searching your AIM ID on every furry site there is turned up nothing helpful. I'd remember your AIM ID if you talked to me more often.

Of course this is all in trying to figure out who's going to FCN so I can try and meet up and give some new folks a chance at becoming a real life friend! By the way...

I STILL HAVE RIDE AND ROOM SPACE AVAILABLE!!!!
